BWXT's Raised Outlook Meets a 27% Slide as PCG's First Full Quarter Arrives

BWX Technologies heads into its third-quarter report with a striking disconnect. Management has raised its full-year outlook on three consecutive calls, backlog stood 40% higher than a year earlier at the last update, and the company reshaped its portfolio around commercial nuclear. Yet the stock has fallen 26.7% since the last report while the S&P 500 was essentially flat. The results, due after the close on November 2, will show whether the business story still holds up or whether the market has spotted something the guidance does not yet reflect.

The Street expects earnings of $1.19 a share on revenue of about $992.4 million. That would be a 19% gain in earnings and roughly 15% revenue growth, a clear acceleration from the second quarter, when earnings rose only about 7% to $1.07 on $901.6 million in revenue. The whisper number of $1.24 sits modestly above consensus, which suggests the people closest to the stock expect a beat. Management's guidance tells a similar story. The company calls for 2026 earnings of $4.70 to $4.80 a share on revenue of roughly $3.8 billion, while full-year consensus sits at $4.61, below the low end of that range. Either analysts doubt the raised outlook or their models have not caught up. A quarter that tracks the guidance rather than the Street would go a long way toward closing that gap.

Much of the expected jump depends on the PCG acquisition, which closed in early July and should contribute its first full quarter. Management lifted its commercial operations growth outlook to about 45% from about 30%, crediting roughly half of the increase to PCG and half to organic growth and Kinetrix. This report is the first real test of that math. The cost of building the platform matters just as much. Management cut its commercial margin target to about 13% from 14% to fund new capacity in the United States and Canada and to integrate PCG. If commercial margins land near that 13% while revenue surges, the investment story holds. If margins slip further, the market may conclude that growth is costing more than promised, especially with capital spending potentially approaching 7% of sales in later years.

The government segment is the quieter source of earnings power. Management raised its margin target there to about 20.5% on strong cost performance in the HPDU program. That same cost discipline trimmed reported revenue growth to the high single digits, since underruns on these contracts reduce revenue. Investors should want to see margins hold near that level, because the government side funds the commercial buildout. The second quarter also showed that the ramp of HPDU and DEUCE work, along with higher corporate expense, can weigh on the headline numbers.

Bookings are the other key item. Backlog slipped to $8.4 billion from $8.7 billion in the prior quarter on lumpy award timing, and management said there is a credible chance of at least one new-build reactor equipment order before year-end. New customers such as utilities are still waiting on financing structures, and the Janus award is pending on government timing. Any progress on new-build orders, the Navy's faster Ford-class carrier schedule, or Canada's plan for up to 10 large reactors would give the backlog figures more weight.

Sentiment has cooled to 3.1% bullish from 7.2% before the last report. The shares trade at $127.19, far below the 200-day moving average of $186.62 and only about 3% above their post-earnings low of $123.05, which tells you how much confidence has drained out. The bar for upside may be lower than the guidance implies. The central question is whether PCG and the commercial ramp can deliver growth without further margin erosion, and whether management can show the new-build orders are getting closer. Confirming the raised outlook would show the commercial nuclear story is still on track, while another commercial margin cut or a vague order timeline would hand the skeptics their argument.
