Cognex Beats Consensus but Misses the Whisper as Record Margins Meet a Softer Q4 Setup and the RealSense Bet

Cognex delivered one of the cleanest operating quarters in its recent history, but the bar investors set was higher than the one analysts published. Adjusted EPS of $0.53 topped the $0.51 consensus. It fell short of the $0.57 Earnings Whisper number, a 7.0% miss against the expectation that mattered most to the market. Revenue of $313.39 million was a company record and edged consensus by 0.5%, rising 13.2% year over year. Earnings grew 51.4% on Earnings Whispers' normalized basis. The central tension is that the business is executing at a level few expected at the start of the year. Even so, the quarter's upside was modest relative to whisper-level optimism, and the fourth-quarter outlook implies a meaningful sequential cooldown.

The quality of the quarter is high, and much of the improvement is structural. Excluding the one-time Commercial Partnership benefit in the year-ago period, revenue grew 19%. The company's adjusted EPS framing shows 89% growth on that basis. Adjusted gross margin reached 71.3%, up 290 basis points, as favorable mix, volume and faster-than-expected pricing more than offset memory cost headwinds. Adjusted operating expenses fell 7% even as revenue climbed. That combination pushed adjusted EBITDA margin to 35.5%, which the company called its ninth straight quarter of margin expansion. Flow-through exceeded 100%. On a GAAP basis, EPS jumped to $0.50 from $0.10. That comparison is flattered by a $33.7 million discrete tax charge in the year-ago quarter, so the adjusted figures are the better guide to underlying progress. Free cash flow of $104 million, a 122% conversion of net income, adds credibility to the earnings.

The call showed management's posture shifting from earlier caution to confidence. Earlier in the year, management framed 2026 as mid-to-high single-digit growth with a 25% exit EBITDA margin. Full-year guidance now calls for $1.143-$1.163 billion in revenue, 31-32% adjusted EBITDA margin, and adjusted EPS of $1.68-$1.72. Four of five end markets grew double digits. China rose 29%. The logistics outlook was lifted to double-digit growth after an 11th consecutive double-digit quarter. Semiconductor expectations have steadily climbed to 'strong double-digit.' Management described a growth cycle that 'seems to be accelerating' and may prove more durable, citing AI, labor shortages and supply-chain diversification.

Bears still have legitimate ammunition, and much of it is forward-looking. Fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $270-$290 million implies roughly 11% growth and a sizable sequential step-down. The midpoint is only about $10 million above the prior implied level. The full-year EPS raise was diluted by a cut to the investment-income assumption, from about $0.11 to $0.08 per share, as bonds are sold to fund RealSense. Europe fell 15%, or mid-single digits excluding a procurement shift, with automotive still flat year to date. Management warned that logistics could moderate or become lumpy against tough comparisons, and greenfield projects are not accelerating. Looking to 2027, operating expenses are guided to grow roughly with inflation, but incremental margins are expected near 60%, well below 2026's roughly 93%. Stock-based compensation will rise about $6 million in the first quarter.

The RealSense acquisition is the strategic wildcard. The all-cash deal for a depth-sensing and robotic-perception specialist extends Cognex into physical AI and could become a new growth pillar. RealSense is not yet in guidance, however, and integration risk is real. Alongside the In-Sight 1750 semiconductor launch and a June 2027 Investor Day, it gives investors catalysts beyond the next quarter.

The market setup is more complicated than the fundamentals imply. Shares have fallen 26.5% since the open after the August report, to $53.06, and sit 8.6% below the 200-day moving average of $58.03. Record margins and two guidance raises have not prevented a substantial de-rating. Investor sentiment moved from slightly negative to modestly positive, improving by about 0.23 points, which suggests expectations were rebuilding into the print. The whisper miss shows that optimism outran the quarter. Earnings Whispers trend readings are mixed: momentum is positive while AVWAP remains negative.

The bottom line is that Cognex's operating transformation is real, visible in 70%-plus gross margins, shrinking expenses and strong cash conversion. However, the quarter beat consensus without clearing the whisper, Q4 guidance points to deceleration, and 2027 flow-through is set to normalize. With the stock well off its post-August levels, the debate now shifts to whether RealSense and a broader automation cycle can sustain growth once the margin-expansion story matures.
