Crocs Beats and Raises Again as HEYDUDE Turns Positive, but Buybacks and a Shrinking North America Temper the Story

Crocs delivered the kind of quarter that changes the conversation around HEYDUDE. Adjusted EPS of $3.69 beat the $3.31 consensus by 6.3% and cleared the $3.47 Earnings Whisper number. Earnings grew 26.4% year over year. Revenue of $1.043 billion topped the $1.00 billion consensus by 4.3% and grew 4.6%, a clear acceleration from roughly 2% growth in the second quarter and a constant-currency decline of about 4% in the first. Management also beat its own targets: adjusted EPS cleared the $3.20-$3.30 guide, and enterprise revenue beat a roughly flat outlook. The company then raised its full-year adjusted EPS range to $14.45-$14.65 from $13.70-$14.00, its third consecutive raise to the 2026 outlook. The central development is that both brands are now growing at the same time, something investors have not been able to say for several quarters.

The quality of the beat deserves some scrutiny, though not for the obvious reason. GAAP EPS of $4.52 was inflated by $64 million in IEEPA tariff refunds. Management correctly stripped those out of adjusted results, so the $3.69 is not flattered by the windfall. The bigger qualifier is share count. Diluted shares fell to about 48.0 million from 54.0 million a year ago. Adjusted net income rose to $177.0 million from $157.4 million, and adjusted operating income grew 11.7%. Roughly half of the headline EPS growth therefore came from repurchases rather than operations, including another $250 million bought back in the quarter. That is still real per-share value creation, backed by $275.5 million of quarterly free cash flow, but it is a more modest operating story than the 26% figure implies. On the margin side:

  • Adjusted gross margin expanded 180 basis points to 60.3%, a sharp reversal from a 170-basis-point contraction in the second quarter.
  • Adjusted operating margin rose to 22.3%, beating the roughly 21.5% guide.

Beneath the headline, the momentum is lopsided by geography. HEYDUDE grew 6.1% after declines of 6%, 13% and 18% in the prior three quarters. Its adjusted gross margin climbed 350 basis points to 45.8%. The rebound came almost entirely from wholesale, which rose 14% on at-once reorders, while HEYDUDE direct-to-consumer was essentially flat. The Crocs brand posted a record third quarter with 4.4% growth, but that was driven by international revenue, up 11.8%, including a 24.1% surge in international DTC. Crocs North America fell 2.1%, with wholesale down 4.9%. Part of the domestic weakness is self-inflicted: a marketplace business-model shift cost about 270 basis points of North America DTC growth. Management expects a 700-800 basis-point headwind over the next several quarters, through the third quarter of 2027. It describes the shift as profit-accretive, with roughly half of the lost revenue offset in wholesale. Bears have legitimate ammunition in the fact that the brand's largest market is still shrinking.

The forward setup leans on a strong fourth quarter. Guidance calls for enterprise growth of 7%-9%, with HEYDUDE up 10%-12%, adjusted operating margin of about 20.5%, and EPS of $3.25-$3.45. Management acknowledged that some of that strength reflects easy comparisons against 2025 cleanup actions. Early 2027 commentary was constructive: Crocs growth roughly in line with 2026's ~4% and HEYDUDE up low-to-mid single digits. Product catalysts include Echo 2.0 traction in Asia, a sandal-charms expansion and an AI shopping agent. The risk list is substantive, however:

  • rising raw-material and oil costs into 2027;
  • a gross-margin mix drag from product diversification;
  • cautious wholesale partners;
  • a K-shaped consumer with weakness at the low end;
  • a promotional fourth quarter.

Adjusted SG&A is now implied slightly higher rather than flat as the company invests behind growth.

The market had not priced in much enthusiasm heading into the print. Investor sentiment improved from -0.09 to +0.02, a meaningful move off negative territory but still only marginally positive. Shares closed at $119.69 before the report, down 4.1% from the open after July's release. That leaves them 15.3% below the $141.28 52-week high set on August 4, so the stock gave back its entire post-second-quarter spike before rebounding from a September low near $108.54. The stock does sit about 9.7% above its 200-day moving average. Earnings Whispers trend readings are mixed, with momentum positive but sequential growth and AVWAP negative, consistent with a stock still working through a choppy quarter.

The bottom line is that Crocs delivered a genuine inflection: revenue accelerated, margins turned back up, HEYDUDE returned to growth ahead of a steeper fourth-quarter ramp, and guidance rose for a third straight time. Investors should still recognize that buybacks are doing much of the per-share lifting, that North America remains a drag that the marketplace transition will obscure for another year, and that cost inflation looms over 2027. With sentiment only just turning positive and shares well off their summer high, the report gives the bull case fresh evidence, but sustained domestic stabilization is what remains to be proven.
