DoorDash Must Prove Its Reinvestment Strategy Pays Off After a 21% Post-Earnings Slide

DoorDash heads into its third-quarter report with an unusual disconnect between its operations and its stock. Last quarter the company beat its own profit guidance by a wide margin, showed accelerating restaurant growth and pointed to autonomy and AI projects that finally looked real. Since then the shares have fallen 21.5% while the S&P 500 barely moved. The November 4 release, due after the close, will test whether the market lost patience with a fundamental story that is still improving, or whether it sensed that management's decision to reinvest rather than raise guidance signals a heavier spending cycle ahead.

The Street is looking for earnings of $0.82 a share on revenue of about $4.54 billion. That works out to roughly 49% earnings growth and nearly 32% revenue growth from a year ago, with Deliveroo now contributing to the comparison. The more telling figure is sequential. Revenue is expected to rise only modestly from last quarter's $4.45 billion, yet earnings are projected to climb sharply from $0.46. That puts the burden on margins and operating leverage rather than raw volume. The Earnings Whisper of $0.86 sits a few cents above consensus, suggesting the more engaged crowd expects another profit beat, though not a dramatic one.

Management's commentary last quarter gives a fairly clear roadmap. Executives said the second-quarter upside, driven by advertising and better subtotal unit economics plus stronger-than-expected volume from its newer international operations, arrived too late to reinvest and simply fell to the bottom line. They also said they expect to land inside the full-year range in the back half and guided take rate roughly flat into the third quarter. Read plainly, that means a repeat of a large beat is not the base case. Any meaningful upside this time would imply the ad and unit-economics gains kept compounding faster than the company could spend them, which would be a genuinely bullish signal. A result that merely lands in range would be consistent with the plan, but in the current tape it may not be enough.

The operating checkpoints matter as much as the headline number. Restaurant growth accelerated from the first quarter to the second, and the company needs to show that momentum held against tougher comparisons. DashPass enjoyed its strongest subscriber growth in about two years, and continued strength there would support order frequency into the holiday season. Deliveroo has posted three straight quarters of accelerating revenue; a fourth would reinforce the case that the acquisition is outperforming its original underwriting. Grocery and new verticals remain on track, by management's account, to turn gross-profit positive by year-end, so updates on basket sizes and Dashmart fulfillment would help confirm that target is within reach.

The newer catalysts deserve scrutiny too. Management said its Dot autonomous delivery program had completed tens of thousands of real deliveries in Phoenix and was aiming for high-single-digit share in a market by year-end. Progress toward that goal, along with evidence that the unified global tech stack is delivering conversion gains, would show the spending is earning a return. On the risk side, a new fee structure for longer deliveries and tech-stack redundancy costs that bleed into 2027 could weigh on the outlook if management frames investment intensity as rising.

Sentiment has cooled slightly from last quarter but remains mildly positive. Technically, the stock sits below its 200-day moving average near $184 and just above its post-earnings low around $164, far from the $239 peak reached after the last report. That positioning lowers the bar for a relief rally, but also leaves little cushion if fourth-quarter commentary disappoints. The central question is whether DoorDash can show that its heavy reinvestment is producing measurable returns without eroding the margin expansion that made last quarter so impressive.
