Brinker's Chili's Engine Accelerates and Lifts the FY27 Guide, but an October Mix Slowdown Clouds the Back Half

Brinker International delivered a quarter that comfortably outran expectations. Adjusted EPS of $2.77 beat the $2.49 consensus by 9.1% and cleared the $2.54 Earnings Whisper. Revenue of $1.476 billion topped estimates by 1.8%. Earnings grew 43.5% year over year on 9.4% revenue growth, a sharp acceleration from the roughly 23% adjusted EPS growth in the fourth quarter. Management raised fiscal 2027 revenue guidance to $6.23-$6.33 billion and adjusted EPS guidance to $13.30-$13.90, from $12.60-$13.40. The central tension is that the guidance raise was in line with what the Street already expected. Management also signaled that the double-digit Chili's comp is not the run rate. October brought the first visible signs of a consumer trimming the check.

The quality of the beat holds up well. Chili's comps rose 10.1% against a 21.4% compare. Traffic contributed 6.4 points and price 3.7, with mix flat. That is a much healthier composition than a year ago, when mix was doing more of the lifting. Restaurant operating margin expanded 150 basis points to 17.7%, compared with just 20 basis points of expansion in Q4 and a 50-basis-point decline in Q3. The improvement was driven by sales leverage despite higher commodity, labor, insurance and delivery costs.

GAAP EPS of $2.64 trailed the adjusted figure mainly because of a $17.6 million loss on redeeming the 8.25% notes. The adjusted number also strips out $0.21 of favorable stock-compensation tax benefits, so it is not flattered by tax. Two caveats deserve attention:

  • **Share count:** Diluted shares fell to 43.0 million from 45.8 million, so buybacks are doing meaningful EPS work.
  • **Balance sheet:** Cash fell to $30.7 million as the company leaned on its revolver to fund the note redemption and $125 million of repurchases.

The call reinforced how much momentum has rebuilt inside Chili's. Comps went from +4% in a weather-hit Q3 to +5.6% in Q4 to +10.1% now. Traffic swung from -1.2% to +6.4% over the same stretch. The Big Crispy sandwich is holding at about 55 units per restaurant per day. Management also disclosed re-image economics of a $500-600K cost for a 3-5% sales lift, with 60-80 re-images planned this year. At its Investor Day, the company targeted 2-3% annual unit growth by fiscal 2029 across more than 300 identified trade areas. Several operational initiatives, including host-stand changes, handheld upgrades and staffing throughput, are explicitly excluded from guidance. Restaurant margin expansion guidance rose to +70-90 bps including the 53rd week, up from +20-40 bps on a 52-week basis.

Bears still have legitimate ammunition:

  • **Consumer pressure:** Mix turned negative in October as guests pulled back on alcohol and dessert. Management attributed the pullback to gas prices and interest rates.
  • **Moderating comps:** Q2 is tracking high-single digits, but comps are expected to moderate to mid-single digits for Q2 through Q4 against tough laps, including November.
  • **Flat Q2 margin:** Q2 restaurant margin is guided roughly flat year over year because of deliberate labor investment.
  • **Cost creep:** About $7 million of freight and oil pressure is hitting restaurant expenses, and G&A guidance moved up slightly to 4.0-4.1% of revenue.
  • **Product and positioning:** The Big Crispy Chicken Parm extension is selling only about two per restaurant per day. A Black Box data correction narrowed the check-gap advantage Chili's had been citing against competitors.
  • **Maggiano's:** The comp worsened to -3.4% on 5.1% lower traffic, though an 11% banquet rebound offers a modest offset.

The market had already priced in much of that caution. Shares hit a 52-week high of $254.99 on August 25. They then slid to $196.72 by the eve of the report, 16.0% below the opening price after the prior release and 22.9% off that peak. That left the stock just 7.9% above the October 23 inter-earnings low. Shares remain 13.3% above the 200-day moving average, so the longer-term uptrend is intact even as the post-August move has been fully unwound. Investor sentiment remained positive but weakened, slipping from 0.45 to 0.34, consistent with fading enthusiasm rather than outright pessimism. The Earnings Whispers trend readings are mixed, with momentum positive while AVWAP remains negative after the pullback.

The pullback creates a setup where a clean beat-and-raise meets reset expectations. However, management's own outlook calls for a meaningful slowdown from Q1's pace. Investors will need evidence that traffic gains can offset a softening check before the stock can reclaim its summer highs.

The bottom line is that Brinker posted an accelerating, high-quality quarter and raised guidance, with Chili's taking share on traffic rather than pricing. The forward picture is more measured: moderating comps, a flat Q2 margin, a negative October mix and a weaker Maggiano's suggest the strongest growth may be behind it for this fiscal year. The beat strengthens the fundamental case, but the stock's 16% decline since the last report shows investors are focused on durability rather than the headline.
