Fortune Brands Misses on Clean Earnings and Cuts Core Outlook Again as Turnaround Inflection Slips to Late 2027

Fortune Brands Innovations (FBIN) reported third-quarter earnings of $0.72 per share on revenue of $1.114 billion, short of the $0.75 consensus and the $0.75 Earnings Whisper number by 4.0%. Revenue missed by 0.6%. Earnings fell 33.9% from a year ago and revenue declined 3.1%. The company's headline figure of $1.14 in EPS before charges and gains looks very different, and the gap is the point. That number included a $0.28 net tax benefit from a legal-entity restructuring and $0.14 of net tariff refunds. Strip those out and you arrive at the $0.72 operating result, which is the honest read on the business. The central tension is a company with a credible restructuring plan, strong cash generation and an operating core that keeps getting worse. Management has once again pushed the date when those two lines are supposed to cross.

The quality of the quarter deserves scrutiny beyond the earnings line. On a GAAP basis, EPS was $0.42, which absorbed a $0.47 impairment tied largely to rationalizing a Water segment EMEA footprint. Operating margin before charges fell 390 basis points to 14.0%, and that figure already included tariff benefits. Sales fell 3.1%, worse than the 1% to 2% decline management had guided to in August. CEO Jesse Singh said results were in line with the outlook excluding tax and tariff items while calling them "not where they need to be." The sales comparison with the prior guide suggests that framing is generous. The damage was concentrated in Water, the company's largest and historically most profitable segment:

  • Water sales fell 5.5%, or 4.3% excluding China.
  • Water margin before charges dropped 680 basis points to 17.6%, despite roughly 135 basis points of tariff help.
  • Security was the bright spot, with margin up 350 basis points to 21.3% on traction from new products.
  • Outdoors grew 3.4% excluding Fiberon but held margin roughly flat at 15.3% as Larson aluminum and freight inflation went unrecovered.

The conference call explained why Water is struggling, and the explanation is not flattering. Management acknowledged a pricing-execution gap costing several hundred basis points of margin. It also pushed price-cost neutrality from the fourth quarter to roughly the second quarter of 2027. Demand is softening as well: single-family new construction weakened further in September and customers turned more cautious. Management now expects new construction down mid-to-high single digits for the year and repair-and-remodel down low single digits. The broader message was a steady reset. A year ago, management claimed share gains and targeted 23% to 24% Water margins. Now share losses are not expected to be lapped until the second half of 2027, which is framed as a "rebuilding year." The turnaround inflection now sits in the fourth quarter of 2027, and the Water recovery may extend beyond it.

Guidance carried that reset into the numbers. Full-year EPS before charges was narrowed to $3.20 to $3.30 from $3.22 to $3.52, and the midpoint fell to $3.25 from $3.37. The company's own bridge makes the core weakness explicit:

  • The core business and end markets took $0.23 off the midpoint.
  • Portfolio optimization and alignment actions removed another $0.22.
  • The $0.28 tax benefit and $0.07 of added tariff refunds covered most of that hole.

Fourth-quarter guidance of $925 million to $995 million in sales and $0.19 to $0.29 in EPS reflects about $100 million of removed revenue. Roughly $55 million comes from a deliberate channel-inventory reduction, $25 million from weaker markets and $20 million from businesses being exited. Part of the destocking unwinds a large first-quarter Water load-in, which sets up a difficult comparison in early 2027.

There is a real constructive case, and bulls are not imagining it:

  • **Portfolio cleanup:** The Fiberon decking business is being sold for $160 million. Combined with the China commercial exit and the EMEA rationalization, the company is shedding operations that lose $50 million to $55 million a year on $320 million to $330 million of revenue.
  • **Cost savings:** Management reiterated $70 million of annualized SG&A savings by the first quarter of 2027 and more than $120 million of total benefit exiting 2027. It set a long-term target of an underlying EBITDA margin above 20%.
  • **Service levels:** Fill rates improved about 10 points to the high 90s.
  • **Cash and leverage:** Third-quarter free cash flow was $331 million versus $177 million a year earlier. Net leverage fell to 2.5x from 2.9x in the first quarter.

These measures improve the balance sheet and the future margin mix, but none of them fixes Water pricing or end-market demand in the near term.

The market setup is more complicated than the miss implies. Shares ended at $46.57 on November 2, the day before the report. That price is 10.4% below the opening price after the August report and 12% under the inter-earnings high of $52.92 set that same day. However, the stock had rebounded 26% from its October 1 low of $36.95 and moved back about 3.3% above its 200-day moving average. Investor sentiment improved from -0.47 to -0.33 but remained negative, consistent with a stock that had partially recovered rather than one positioned for good news. Price, sequential-growth and momentum trend readings remain negative, while AVWAP is the lone positive. A guide below estimates now tests whether the recent rebound was built on anything more durable than restructuring optimism.

The bottom line is that Fortune Brands delivered a clean-earnings miss and a third consecutive reset to core expectations, with tax and tariff gains disguising a $0.23 cut to the underlying outlook. The restructuring is becoming concrete, and cash flow is genuinely strong. But Water margins, pricing execution and new-construction demand are moving the wrong way, and the timeline for a turnaround keeps getting longer. Investors are being asked to look through 2027 on the strength of the plan, and bears have legitimate ammunition until Water shows tangible progress.
