Gentex Misses Again as Cost Squeeze Cuts 2026 Margins While the 2027 Growth Story Holds

Gentex delivered a third-quarter miss that was less about demand than about execution timing and cost inflation, and that distinction is the central tension in the report. Adjusted earnings of $0.47 per share fell 11.3% short of the $0.51 consensus and further below the $0.53 Earnings Whisper number. Revenue of $647.7 million missed the $669.2 million consensus by 3.2% and declined 1.1% from a year ago. Earnings Whispers calculates EPS growth at 2.2%, while the company's revised non-GAAP presentation shows adjusted EPS flat at $0.47 in both periods. Either way, profit growth has stalled after a record $0.58 adjusted result in the second quarter. Management also trimmed nearly every 2026 guidance line, yet it held its 2027 revenue outlook of $2.80 billion to $2.90 billion. Investors are being asked to look through a deteriorating near term toward a better 2027.

The quality of the quarter deserves scrutiny. This was the second straight quarter in which revenue landed well below management's own start-of-quarter forecast. The shortfall was roughly $35 million this time, after about $30 million in the second quarter. On the call, the company attributed it to a Hyundai/Kia strike and a delayed Ford F-250/350 launch. Gross margin fell to 33.4%, down from 34.4% a year ago and 37% in the second quarter, which had been helped by a tariff-related benefit (about 34.5% excluding it). Higher precious-metal costs and lost operating leverage drove the decline, with ruthenium reportedly up about 500%. GAAP EPS fell to $0.43 from $0.46. Credit-loss reserves and a $4.7 million technology-investment impairment widened other losses. Operating cash flow dropped to $83.5 million from $147 million a year earlier as inventory climbed to $550 million and receivables rose.

Beneath the headline, the content story remains credible. North American automotive revenue rose 3% even as regional light vehicle production fell 5%, roughly 800 basis points of outgrowth. Europe grew 13% excluding the Volkswagen program loss, helped by driver-monitoring and in-cabin monitoring launches. China revenue fell 44% and remains a drag, with management describing the market as stable but not recovering. Diversification is the clearest bright spot. Non-automotive revenue grew about 17% and reached 15% of sales, up from 12% a year ago. Premium Audio accelerated to 27% growth from 16% in the second quarter. Aerospace rose 135% and Fire Protection 36%.

The forward-looking ledger cuts both ways. On the positive side, Gentex secured its first PCBA electronics-manufacturing award, worth about $180 million annualized with production slated for 2029. That lands in the upper half of the $100-200 million range management framed last quarter. The company also has:

  • an Alpine distribution deal not included in the original 2027 plan;
  • fourth-generation FDM launches in full swing;
  • a $80-100 million 2027 target for driver- and in-cabin-monitoring revenue;
  • three additional OEMs evaluating the dimmable visor.

Bears have legitimate ammunition, however. Full-year revenue guidance was cut to about $2.65 billion, the bottom of the prior range. Gross margin guidance dropped to 34.0%-34.5% from 34.5%-35.5%, including $10-15 million of fourth-quarter costs that will not be recovered until the first half of 2027. Management called it "way too early" for 2027 margins but floated 33%-34% with downside risk, below the 34%-35% "sweet spot" cited just a quarter ago. Memory shortages have spread to PCBs and passive components, some up 8-10x, and only about half of 2027 supply is secured. Lower opex and capex guidance reads more like defense than confidence.

The market had already been pricing in caution. Investor sentiment deteriorated meaningfully, falling from -0.31 to -0.52. Shares closed at $21.74 the day before the report, down 6.6% since the opening after the July release. That left the stock 6.4% below its 200-day moving average and 11% below the $24.44 inter-earnings high set days after the last report, though 5.4% above the October 14 low. Price and AVWAP trend readings remain negative. Notably, the company repurchased $132.6 million of stock at an average of $23.44, roughly double the prior quarter's pace. Those purchases sit above the current price, and management signaled a similar pace ahead.

The bottom line is that Gentex's content-per-vehicle and diversification thesis survived the quarter, but its near-term earnings power did not. Two consecutive revenue misses, a margin outlook that has reversed within a single quarter, and supply-chain inflation that management cannot yet fully offset mean the maintained 2027 revenue target carries less weight than it otherwise would. Revenue growth may still arrive, but investors now have good reason to question how much of it reaches the bottom line.
