Huntsman Must Prove Its Margin Recovery Survives Fading Tailwinds and a Skeptical Market

Huntsman heads into its third-quarter report with an awkward split between what management said and what the stock has done. Last quarter's call was the most upbeat in a year: MDI earnings nearly doubled from a year earlier, volumes outran weak end markets, leverage fell, and the company unveiled a merger of equals with Olin carrying roughly $400 million in targeted synergies. The market has not bought it. Shares have fallen almost 20% since that report, trailing the S&P 500 by more than 21 percentage points, and at $8.80 they sit well below the 200-day moving average of $11.77 and near the bottom of a post-earnings range of $8.00 to $11.00. That entire range sits beneath the prior quarter's low of $10.32, a sign of how sharply the stock has been rerated.

The bar for the quarter is low in absolute terms. Consensus calls for earnings of $0.07 a share on revenue of about $1.60 billion. Revenue would be up roughly 9.6% from a year ago, a respectable gain for a business whose demand is barely growing. The 333% earnings growth figure sounds dramatic, but it mostly reflects a move from a small loss of $0.03 a year ago to a thin profit. The more telling comparison is sequential. Revenue is expected to slip from $1.66 billion last quarter, while earnings would improve from breakeven. That combination implies the Street expects margins to hold up even as sales soften. That is a reasonable assumption only if the recovery management described is structural rather than borrowed.

This is where the previous call matters most. Management was candid that some second-quarter gains would reverse. These included a modest aerospace pull-forward in Advanced Materials, a few million dollars of benefit from competitor polyol outages, and U.S. MDI supply disruptions that have since come back online. Management characterized third-quarter MDI supply and demand as roughly balanced and described July only as stable. A clean quarter would show polyurethanes margins holding despite those reversals. It would also show Advanced Materials volumes still running ahead of build rates on electrical infrastructure, power grid and new EV applications, and spray foam extending its double-digit growth. If profitability instead drops back toward breakeven, the argument that innovation and pricing are driving the recovery weakens considerably.

Europe is the second swing factor. Polyurethanes in the region had just turned EBITDA-positive after a long stretch of losses when natural gas jumped from the low teens to above $20 per MMBtu ahead of the last call. Whether Europe stayed in the black through the quarter will indicate how fragile that progress is. Middle East disruptions add noise from two directions. They have tightened global MDI supply, which can help pricing, while also weighing on a Saudi amines joint venture. Any read on whether U.S. anti-dumping duties are beginning to lift the MDI pricing floor would be meaningful as well.

The balance sheet deserves equal attention. Net leverage improved to 5.4 times from 6.1 times, and management pointed toward roughly 4 times by year-end. Further progress this quarter would keep that target credible and ease concerns that dominated the stock a year ago. Updates on the Olin deal, including its timing, regulatory path and confidence in the synergy plan, should also feature prominently, given investors' clear show-me posture. The long chlorine supply contract running to 2030 limits how quickly some of those benefits can arrive.

Sentiment has improved, roughly doubling to about 24% bullish from 11% before the last report, yet the share price tells a more skeptical story. The central question is whether Huntsman can sustain margin improvement without the one-time help it had in the spring and with demand still growing only about 0 to 2%. If it can, the selloff looks overdone. If it cannot, the improving narrative will rest almost entirely on a merger that has not yet closed.
