IBP Misses on Earnings as Record Revenue Collides With Margin Erosion and a Gloomier 2027 Outlook

Installed Building Products delivered a quarter in which the top line and the bottom line moved in opposite directions. Earnings Whispers puts third-quarter earnings at $2.60 per share, 5.1% below the $2.74 consensus and down 14.5% from a year ago. Revenue reached a record $808.4 million, up 3.9% and 1.6% above expectations. That divergence is the central tension. Diversification into commercial, multifamily, and distribution is keeping sales growing through a soft housing market, but those dollars are coming in at lower margins, and management's commentary suggests the pressure will last into 2027. The company's own adjusted EPS was $2.76, down from $3.18, and GAAP diluted EPS fell to $2.24 from $2.74. Each measure differs from the Earnings Whispers figure, but all three point to the same year-over-year decline.

The quality of the revenue beat deserves scrutiny. Consolidated same-branch sales rose just 0.6%, and acquisitions supplied about 84% of the $30.2 million revenue increase. Underneath, residential same-branch installation sales fell 2.6%, with single-family down 4.9%. Commercial same-branch sales rose 10.3%. Gross margin compressed to 31.8% from 34.0%. Installation margins slipped to 35.0% from 36.9%, and the lower-margin Other segment fell to 23.1% from 25.2% while growing faster as a share of the mix. The most telling disclosure is in the incremental margin table. Same-branch revenue rose $4.8 million, yet same-branch adjusted EBITDA fell $15.4 million. Adjusted EBITDA declined 8.3% to $128.3 million, and the margin dropped to 15.9% from 18.0%. Below the operating line, interest expense rose to $10.4 million from $6.9 million.

The call provided a cost breakdown. Aluminum, primarily in gutters, cost roughly 100 basis points of gross margin, and management acknowledged it was slow to raise gutter pricing. Fuel took another 40 basis points, freight 20, and mix 20. Fuel is not surcharged in installation, and only partial aluminum recovery is expected in the fourth quarter. The bigger change was in the forward framework. Earlier this year, management spoke confidently about operating within a 32%-34% gross margin range. It now calls 2026 "challenged" within that range and says 2027 will be "clearly at the low end." Management also expects 2027 single-family and multifamily starts to fall by mid-single digits. Light commercial is getting tougher, reversing the second-quarter view that it had turned sooner than expected. Price/mix excluding heavy commercial slowed to +0.4% from +1% and is expected to weaken further, with public builder revenue implied down about 6% in the fourth quarter.

The call still preserved a credible growth story. Volume declines narrowed to about 2%, compared with 5% in the second quarter and 10% in the first. Multifamily sales rose roughly 8%, the first positive inflection in six to seven quarters. California and Florida single-family markets appear to have bottomed. A 20%-25% spray foam price increase was passed through without margin loss. The heavy commercial backlog is up mid-teens from record levels. However, heavy commercial growth has decelerated from above 20% in the first quarter to above 13% now, and it faces a 38.5% comparison in the fourth quarter. Other segment growth is expected to slow to mid-single digits. The $250 million term loan add-on lifts liquidity above $1 billion and positions IBP for larger acquisitions. That supports the reiterated target of at least $100 million in acquired revenue, but it also pushes quarterly interest expense toward $15 million. The company also made no buybacks in the third quarter because its trading window was closed.

The market setup is more complicated than the miss implies. Shares fell to a 52-week low of $176.15 on October 14 and then rallied about 34% into the report. They still closed at $235.42, 4.4% below both the post-August opening price and the 200-day moving average, and about 7% below the inter-earnings high. Investor sentiment improved meaningfully but remains slightly negative, rising from -0.23 to -0.03. Those readings predate the call. A sharp pre-report rebound, combined with expectations that were only modestly negative, leaves less cushion for a quarter that lowered the margin outlook. The Earnings Whispers trend readings are mixed, with price trend negative while AVWAP is positive.

The bottom line is that IBP showed it can grow revenue in a weak housing market, but not without giving up profitability. Volume trends are improving and multifamily has turned positive. Against that, margin guidance, the 2027 starts outlook, price/mix, and light commercial demand all moved the wrong way. Until aluminum and fuel costs are recovered through pricing and the commercial engine proves it can absorb tougher comparisons, bears have legitimate ammunition.
