IDEXX Laboratories delivered another clean beat-and-raise in the third quarter. Earnings came in at $3.98 per share, ahead of the $3.71 consensus and the $3.82 Earnings Whisper number, a 4.2% beat. Revenue of $1.214 billion topped the $1.19 billion consensus by 2.0%. Earnings grew 17.1% year over year on 9.9% revenue growth. The company reported GAAP diluted EPS of $4.01, which included a $0.03 non-operating gain on an equity investment, and cited comparable EPS growth of 22%.
The central tension is clear. IDEXX is accelerating its core diagnostics franchise in a U.S. veterinary market that is getting worse, not better. At the same time, the cost of its push into software and AI is starting to show up in margins. For now, growth is winning that argument decisively.
The quality of the beat holds up well. Organic revenue rose 10%, and the beat came from operations rather than below-the-line help. CAG Diagnostics recurring revenue grew 11% organically, up from 10.3% in the second quarter. International drove the improvement, accelerating to 14% from about 12%. VetLab consumables rose 15% organically, supported by an 11% expansion of the premium instrument installed base, and reference labs grew 10%. Gross margin widened 110 basis points to 62.9%.
The softer spots are real but peripheral:
- Rapid assay revenue grew only 1% as testing volumes fell.
- Capital instrument revenue was flat.
- Water growth slowed to 8% from 13% in the prior quarter.
- LPD growth slowed to 3% from 9%.
Free cash flow was $421 million in the quarter and $978 million year to date, well ahead of last year's $731 million pace.
The call preserved, and arguably strengthened, a credible innovation-led growth story. U.S. same-store clinical visits deteriorated to -1.8% from -1.3% in the second quarter and -1% in the first. Management cited muted puppy and kitten adoption and macro pressure on wellness visits. Even so, U.S. diagnostics recurring growth held near 10%, maintaining a roughly 1,100-basis-point premium to visit trends for a fourth straight quarter.
The instrument flywheel is the reason:
- Premium placements hit a record third-quarter level of 5,780.
- inVue Dx placements climbed to 1,904, from 1,602 in the second quarter and 1,100 in the first, lifting the installed base to nearly 11,000.
- Management now expects to exceed both its 5,500 annual target and its 20,000 five-year goal for inVue Dx.
The guidance trajectory tells the story. Organic growth guidance has moved from 7%–9% at the start of the year to 9.3%–10.0% now. The EPS range has moved from $14.29–$14.80 to $14.96–$15.16.
The margin side deserves scrutiny. Comparable operating margin expansion slowed to 60 basis points, from 110 in the second quarter and 100 in the first. IDEXX also trimmed its full-year reported operating margin outlook to 32.1%–32.3% from 32.3%–32.5%, largely because of roughly 30 basis points of dilution from the CoVet acquisition. CoVet is an AI clinical assistant with about $20 million in annualized revenue, and it carries an estimated $0.13 of 2026 EPS dilution. The guide implies a fourth-quarter operating margin of only 28.4%–29.3%. Management also flagged an approximately 70-basis-point currency headwind to fourth-quarter reported revenue. Bears have legitimate ammunition in the open question of whether 2027 margin expansion can stay within the company's 50–100 basis-point framework if CoVet's drag carries forward.
The catalyst slate is unusually dense:
- Cancer Dx is now a multi-cancer panel with mast cell tumor detection, at an unchanged price.
- Hemangiosarcoma detection is slated for year-end, with broad North American availability in the first quarter of 2027.
- inVue Dx fine-needle aspirate testing became broadly available in North America at the start of the fourth quarter.
- Catalyst Pro BNP has launched.
- The next point-of-care platform, MultiCue Dx, will be detailed at the January 18 VMX investor event.
The market setup is more complicated than the surprise implies. Shares stood at $551.21 heading into the report, down 8.5% from the $602.33 open after the August release. That leaves them 3.9% below the 200-day moving average and 11.7% under the inter-earnings high of $624.15. The stock set a 52-week low of $500.61 on September 11 and has since recovered about 10% from that level. Investor sentiment remains negative but improved meaningfully, from -0.26 to -0.12. That suggests skepticism about the visit backdrop and valuation is easing rather than gone. Earnings Whispers momentum and AVWAP trend readings are positive, while the price trend is only neutral.
The bottom line is that IDEXX is proving it can grow diagnostics at double digits even as U.S. vet traffic shrinks, and it has raised its outlook for a third consecutive quarter. The weak point is no longer demand but margin cadence. A slowing comparable expansion rate, a CoVet-driven guide cut, and a soft implied fourth quarter give skeptics something to watch heading into 2027 and the January product reveal.
