IDEX Beats and Raises a Third Time as Growth Broadens, but Cooling Orders Test the Momentum Story

IDEX Corporation delivered another clean beat-and-raise in the third quarter, and this time the more important development was where the growth came from. Adjusted EPS of $2.33 topped the $2.23 consensus and the $2.30 Earnings Whisper number, a 1.3% beat. Revenue of $951.7 million beat the $919.36 million consensus by 3.5%. Earnings grew 14.8% year over year and revenue grew 8.3%. Organic sales rose 8%, up from 5% in each of the first two quarters, so top-line growth clearly accelerated. Management raised full-year guidance for the third consecutive quarter. The central tension is that sales are accelerating and broadening just as orders cool from their second-quarter spike.

The quality of the beat holds up well. GAAP diluted EPS rose 15% to $1.95, matching the adjusted growth rate, so the improvement did not depend on adjustments. Gross margin expanded 60 basis points to 45.1% despite price/cost headwinds the company attributed to continued inflation. Adjusted EBITDA margin improved 50 basis points to 27.8%, above the company's own 27%-27.5% target. Cash generation was strong: free cash flow rose to $214 million, conversion was 124%, and gross leverage fell to 1.8x. That balance sheet funded $74.6 million of third-quarter buybacks, $228 million year to date, which cut the diluted share count to 74.0 million from 75.2 million. Buybacks therefore added modestly to per-share growth, but operating income growth of roughly 12% carried most of the load.

Health & Science Technologies remains the engine. Organic sales grew 13% on AI-driven data center power and semiconductor demand plus space and defense, and segment margin widened 110 basis points to 28.8%. What changed this quarter is the rest of the portfolio:

  • **Fluid & Metering:** The segment was planned flat for the year but accelerated to 4% organic growth from 1% in Q2, with orders up 11%.
  • **Fire & Safety/Diversified:** Organic sales swung to +6% from -1%, and margin jumped 140 basis points.
  • **Leading indicators:** Management cited short-cycle industrial order step-ups in September and October, improving agricultural preseason orders, and early signs of life in energy.

On the call, management's tone has shifted over the past year, from saying it was not seeing an inflection to now describing broadening demand.

Bears still have legitimate ammunition, and most of it sits in the order book:

  • **Slower order growth:** Orders of $991 million still exceeded sales, but growth slowed to 13% from a record 28% in Q2.
  • **HST orders:** Growth fell to 21% from 47% as lumpy data center orders paused.
  • **FSDP orders:** Growth was just 1% versus 19% in the prior quarter.
  • **Lingering weak spots:** Chemicals remain fatigued, and life sciences was flat on a legacy program roll-off.
  • **Margin outlook:** The margin guide moved only at the low end, to 27.1%-27.3%. Management flagged a seasonal fourth-quarter step-down, planned talent investments that could temper incremental margins, stubborn inflation, and data center ecosystem capacity limits.
  • **2027 comparisons:** Management cautioned that comparisons in the advantaged markets get tougher next year, after those businesses grew roughly 50% year to date and now exceed a third of the portfolio.

The offsets for next year are tangible. The life sciences roll-off should be largely lapped by year-end, and management said that business could add to growth in 2027. Product extensions, such as Muon electroforming for optical circuit switching and laser-etched RF antennas for space, broaden the addressable market. The guidance trajectory is also notable. Full-year organic growth guidance has climbed from 1%-2% to 6.5%-6.8%, and adjusted EPS guidance from $8.15-$8.35 to $8.91-$8.96. Against $6.65 of year-to-date adjusted EPS, the new range implies a fourth quarter roughly in line with the third, which is consistent with the seasonal margin dip.

The market setup is more muted than the fundamentals. Investor sentiment slipped modestly further below neutral, from -0.01 to -0.05, so expectations entering the report were cautious rather than euphoric. The stock set its 52-week high of $243.80 on the day of the July report. It then slid to $219.44 in mid-September before recovering to $233.21, which is 1.6% below the post-July opening price. Shares sit 8.3% above their 200-day moving average and in the upper half of their inter-earnings range. Momentum and AVWAP trend readings are positive, while price trend is neutral. The pattern suggests investors have been rewarding the story without chasing it.

The bottom line is that IDEX converted a narrow, data-center-led rally into a broader industrial recovery, with accelerating organic growth, expanding margins, and strong cash flow supporting another guidance raise. The order deceleration, tougher 2027 comparisons, and a capped margin outlook keep the debate alive. The next test is whether short-cycle strength in Fluid & Metering and Fire & Safety can offset the lumpiness in HST orders.
