IMAX delivered the kind of quarter its operating model has long promised. Third-quarter adjusted earnings of $2.21 per share beat the $1.06 consensus by 102.8% and cleared the $1.09 Earnings Whisper number with ease. Earnings grew 342.0% year over year. The company cited a 370% increase on its own basis. Revenue of $174.55 million topped the $169.13 million consensus by a more modest 3.2% and rose 63.7%. That gap is the story. A small revenue beat turned into a doubled EPS estimate, which shows how much incremental box office falls to the bottom line once fixed costs are covered. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey generated $538 million of IMAX box office in the quarter, and that single film created most of the leverage.
The quality of the beat deserves some scrutiny, but it holds up. The adjusted figure includes a $36.7 million release of a Canadian deferred tax valuation allowance, worth about $0.63 per share. Management put adjusted EPS at roughly $1.58 excluding that benefit, still about 50% above consensus. Adjusted results also excluded a $6.8 million goodwill impairment. The operating picture needs no flattering:
- **Gross margin:** expanded 920 basis points to 72.3%.
- **Adjusted EBITDA margin:** reached 69.3%, up from 48.6% a year ago.
- **Content Solutions:** revenue jumped 110% at a record 76% gross margin.
- **Technology Products and Services:** revenue rose 28%, driven mostly by box-office-linked rentals rather than system sales.
IMAX captured 6.7% of global industry box office on less than 1% of the world's screens.
The call showed sequential acceleration rather than a one-off spike. Revenue grew from $81.4 million in the first quarter, which was down year over year, to $103 million in the second and $175 million in the third. EBITDA margin climbed from 38% to 46.6% to 69%. Management raised full-year adjusted EBITDA margin guidance to about 50%, up from the mid-40s target it had reaffirmed on every prior call. It also said 2026 global box office will now "significantly exceed" its long-held $1.4 billion target. Net leverage fell to 0.2x, and year-to-date free cash flow reached $100 million.
The full-year margin outlook carries a less obvious implication. A full-year margin near 50%, set against 55.6% year to date, implies a fourth-quarter margin well below the year's run rate. Two factors point that way:
- **Install timing:** installations of lower-margin system sales are heavily back-end loaded.
- **Film timing:** Dune: Part Three arrives only in December.
On the network side, signings tell two stories. The release table shows 79 signings through September 30, with 20 in the third quarter versus 19 a year earlier. Management's figure of 105-plus includes 22 deals signed in the week before the call. Momentum is clearly building, with a 13-theater European deal, Malaysia, the Middle East, a first deal in Japan and a pipeline of roughly 150 locations. Much of that strength arrived after the quarter closed. Meanwhile:
- **Installations:** slowed to 32 from 38.
- **Backlog:** fell to 409 from 478, partly because 17 Greater China locations were cancelled.
- **Full-year installs:** the 160-175 target now depends on a heavy fourth quarter.
The forward catalyst list is long:
- Dune: Part Three pre-sales above $30 million, nearly two months before release.
- 10-15 additional 70mm locations.
- Pilots of a smaller premium auditorium format.
- IMAX Enhanced certification for Meta's VR device.
- An exclusive Netflix theatrical release.
- A 2027 slate with four 70mm releases and 12-plus Filmed for IMAX titles.
Bears still have legitimate ammunition:
- **2027 guidance deferred:** management pushed its outlook to early next year, and 2026 now sets a towering comparison.
- **China:** recovers to budget only if Avengers: Doomsday performs.
- **Rental economics:** the rental take rate dipped on film and market mix.
- **Exhibitor friction:** some exhibitors refused the Netflix window.
- **Industry backdrop:** flat worldwide box office limits IMAX's leverage over theater economics.
Investor expectations shifted sharply heading into the report. Earnings Whispers sentiment jumped from essentially neutral (0.01) to a clearly positive 0.45. Shares closed at $51.76 the day before the release, up 24.0% from the $41.75 open after the July report and about 20% above the 200-day moving average. The stock also sat 10.3% below the $57.73 52-week high set on September 28, at the peak of the Odyssey run, so it had already given back part of that rally before the print. Trend readings are mixed: momentum is positive while the AVWAP trend remains negative.
The bottom line is that IMAX proved its incremental margin thesis in unusually emphatic fashion. It doubled consensus EPS even after stripping out the tax benefit, and it raised both its box office and margin targets. The harder question is durability. With 2027 guidance withheld, a single film driving a record year, and stronger sentiment raising the bar, the Dune: Part Three opening and early-2027 guidance become the next real tests of whether the 'IMAX awakening' is a new baseline or a peak.
