IPG Photonics Beats on an Advanced Solutions Surge, but Cooling Bookings and a Sequential Q4 Dip Temper the Quarter

IPG Photonics delivered a clean headline beat for the third quarter. Adjusted earnings came in at $0.61 per share, 24.5% above the $0.49 consensus and up 74.3% from a year ago. Revenue of $287.5 million topped expectations by 1.7% and grew 14.6%, the company's fourth straight quarter of double-digit growth. Under the surface, the story is more complicated. The beat was driven by a lumpy defense order and a non-recurring tariff refund. Bookings cooled to roughly one-times billings, and the fourth-quarter outlook implies a sequential decline. That is the central tension: the trailing numbers are the best IPG has posted in some time, while the forward indicators flattened.

The quality of the beat deserves scrutiny. Adjusted gross margin rose to 41.0% from 39.8% a year ago, but it included $5.0 million in net tariff refunds worth about 170 basis points. Excluding the refund, adjusted gross margin was 39.3%, still an improvement from roughly 39% in Q2 and 37.8% in Q1. Q2 also benefited from a $4.7 million refund, so two consecutive quarters of profit beats were partly flattered by items management does not expect to recur in Q4. GAAP results were less adjusted than in recent periods. Diluted EPS rose to $0.47 from $0.18, helped by a GAAP tax rate of 29% versus 52% a year ago. The cash picture was genuinely strong. Operating cash flow was $46 million, up from $38 million in Q2 and negative $5 million in Q1. Cash and short-term investments reached $926 million with no debt.

The growth mix shifted sharply. Advanced Solutions jumped 33% year over year and 15% sequentially, reversing declines of 9% in Q2 and 5% in Q1. Two drivers stood out:

  • Semiconductor revenue more than doubled, with design wins in next-generation lithography, metrology and inspection tools.
  • Most of the Lockheed Crossbow order shipped in the quarter.

Industrial Solutions, still 83% of revenue, lost momentum. It grew 12% year over year but only 1% sequentially, down from 16% and 4% in Q2. Europe slipped 1% on weaker cutting and welding. Emerging growth products fell to 52% of revenue from 58% on mix.

The forward signals are where bears have legitimate ammunition. Book-to-bill fell to about one, after management described it as "above 1" or "firmly above 1" on each of the prior three calls. Management also flagged a new moderation in China battery capacity additions after several strong quarters, and factored it into the outlook. Q4 guidance calls for:

  • Revenue of $265 million to $295 million. The $280 million midpoint sits below Q3's actual.
  • Adjusted gross margin of 37% to 40%, half a point below the prior quarter's range.
  • Adjusted EBITDA of $33 million to $50 million.
  • Adjusted EPS of $0.30 to $0.60, unchanged from the prior quarter's range.

The guide excludes the pending Lumibird Medical acquisition. The remaining Crossbow shipments land in Q4, which leaves defense revenue lumpy heading into 2027. Inflation in materials, freight and wages adds pressure on margins that will no longer have tariff refunds as a cushion.

Management did preserve a credible longer-term growth story. Lumibird Medical is expected to close in Q4. Management now frames it as expanding IPG's medical addressable market to more than $2 billion and expects it to be accretive in 2027. Other catalysts include:

  • A Crossbow SE extension aimed at longer ranges and larger drones.
  • A new European additive manufacturing business expected to contribute meaningfully next year.
  • Management's view that several hundred basis points of absorption-driven gross margin gains should begin to materialize in 2027.
  • A March 2, 2027 Investor Day that will set long-term financial targets and give the company a forum to make that case.

The market has not been giving IPG the benefit of the doubt. Shares fell 22.4% from the $93.99 open after the August report to $72.91 ahead of this release. They entered earnings 27.9% below the 200-day moving average and just 6.8% above a 52-week low of $68.27 set on October 23, well off the $99.95 high reached the day after the prior report. Investor sentiment, already slightly negative, weakened further from -0.08 to -0.14, a modest but meaningful deterioration. The Earnings Whispers trend readings are split: sequential growth and momentum are positive, while price and AVWAP trends remain negative. That split mirrors the gap between improving reported fundamentals and poor stock performance. Depressed expectations lower the bar, but the guide offers little near-term reason to rerate.

The bottom line is that IPG delivered a strong quarter on paper, but a meaningful part of it came from a non-recurring refund and a defense order that will not repeat at the same scale. Bookings, China battery demand and the sequential Q4 guide all point to a pause. The stock's slide toward its lows suggests investors had already priced in some of that softness. The next leg of the debate likely hinges on whether Lumibird, semiconductor wins and promised 2027 margin gains can offset a flattening industrial core.
