MGP Ingredients Faces a Credibility Test as Branded Spirits Gains Collide With Ingredient Cost Woes

MGP Ingredients enters its fiscal third-quarter report with a split personality. Its Branded Spirits business has started to look like a genuine turnaround story, while its Ingredient Solutions unit has forced management to cut its margin outlook two quarters in a row and its Distilling Solutions arm remains stuck in a deep trough. The stock has already rendered a harsh verdict, falling about 25% since the last report while the S&P 500 gained nearly 4%. The question now is whether the company can show that its reaffirmed full-year outlook still holds together.

The Street is bracing for a weak quarter. Consensus calls for earnings of $0.34 per share, down 60% from $0.85 a year ago, on revenue of $115.7 million, an 11.6% decline. That is a sharp step down from the $0.72 and $124.4 million posted last quarter, which suggests analysts expect a heavier drag from the Penelope earn-out financing, distributor disruption and soft distilling demand. Management has held its fiscal 2026 targets of $480 million to $500 million in sales, $90 million to $98 million in adjusted EBITDA and $1.50 to $1.80 in adjusted EPS across three consecutive calls. The steep sequential decline in third-quarter estimates hints that the Street may be leaning toward the lower half of that range, so any language around where the company expects to land will carry real weight.

Branded Spirits is where management's confidence was most visible, and it needs to stay that way. Sales excluding other products grew 3% last quarter, beating weaker industry trackers, with Premium Plus reaccelerating to 5% growth and mid and value brands finally turning positive. Brands such as Penelope and Yellowstone posted strong gains, and gross margin edged up to 53%. Validation this quarter would mean continued growth, evidence that the Raise Beverage Group transition is lifting depletions beyond its early month-one gains, and margin benefits from the expanded pruning of roughly 47% of the brand portfolio. A slip back toward flat or negative growth would suggest last quarter was a timing blip rather than an inflection.

Ingredient Solutions is the swing factor most likely to test patience. Segment gross margin fell to just 10.1% as waste starch and effluent disposal costs climbed, and the full-year outlook now sits at high single digits to low double digits, with the low-20s target pushed to the end of 2027. Four new national customers are encouraging, but higher throughput has also meant more waste. Margins holding near or above last quarter's level would suggest the guidance reset was finally conservative enough; another leg down would raise doubts about management's handle on the cost problem. In Distilling Solutions, where sales fell 42% and brown goods dropped 59%, the bar is low. Stability, plus further strength from the private-label whiskey customer, would be welcome, but customers have shown little appetite for long-term commitments.

Balance sheet and credit issues add another layer. Net leverage jumped to roughly 3.5 times after the Penelope payment and was expected to peak this quarter, so signs of deleveraging ahead matter. Any additional fallout from the RNDC bankruptcy beyond the $2.1 million provision already taken, or delays in open and control state distributor transitions, would weigh on the branded story.

Sentiment has warmed modestly, rising to about 14% bullish from 3.5% last quarter, even as the stock has slid to $15.02, well below its 200-day average of $18.68 and closer to the bottom of its post-earnings range. That combination suggests expectations are subdued, giving the company room to surprise if it delivers. Ultimately, the report hinges on whether Branded Spirits momentum and cost savings can keep offsetting Ingredient Solutions erosion. If they can, the reaffirmed outlook survives; if not, a guidance cut becomes the story.
