Oil States Must Prove Its Trimmed 2026 Outlook Holds as Backlog Sits at Decade High

Oil States International heads into its third-quarter report with an unusual split personality. Its backlog is the largest in more than a decade, its Downhole business has finally turned, and its revenue mix has shifted decisively toward offshore and international work. Yet three months ago management cut its full-year outlook because Middle East disruptions kept pushing customer orders to the right. The report due before the open on October 30 is the first real test of whether that reset was conservative enough, or whether more 2026 revenue is drifting into 2027.

Wall Street expects earnings of $0.10 a share on revenue of $160.9 million. That would mean 25% earnings growth from the $0.08 earned a year ago, but on revenue that is 2.6% lower than last year's $165.2 million, so this is a margin and cost story rather than a growth story. The more revealing comparison is with the guidance. Management now targets full-year revenue of $640 million to $660 million and adjusted EBITDA of $77 million to $83 million, down from $680 million to $700 million and $90 million to $95 million. With $302 million of revenue and roughly $36 million of EBITDA booked in the first half, the company needs about $338 million to $358 million of revenue and $41 million to $47 million of EBITDA in the back half. Consensus for the third quarter sits below the average quarterly pace that math implies, which suggests analysts are either building in a heavy fourth quarter or quietly doubting the low end of the range. Either way, a third-quarter print near consensus leaves little margin for error in December.

The operating checklist flows directly from last quarter's call. Backlog of $451 million and a 1.2 times book-to-bill were the strongest pieces of evidence that demand is intact, and management reiterated a full-year book-to-bill of at least 1.0. Another quarter of bookings at or above shipments would support the argument that the problem is timing, not demand. A slide in backlog, particularly in connector and production facility orders tied to the Middle East, would challenge it. Offshore Manufactured Products margins also deserve attention after slipping to 19.3% from the 20% to 21% range; a rebound would suggest the dip reflected mix and absorption rather than pricing.

Downhole Technologies is the swing factor on the upside. Revenue jumped to $40 million, the best since 2023, as gun and shape-charge volumes doubled and the new Flex product lines gained traction. Holding that level would confirm the inflection was real rather than a restocking burst, especially with U.S. land activity described as only modestly better and operators still disciplined. Elevated tungsten, powder and copper costs remain the threat to segment profitability. Cash is the other pressure point. Operating cash flow was negative $6 million last quarter after a $27 million first-half inventory build, and free cash flow guidance of $35 million to $40 million now leans on asset sales. Inventory converting into shipments and positive operating cash would go a long way toward restoring confidence under new chief executive Lloyd Hajdik.

The market has been forgiving. Shares have gained 9.8% since the last report, roughly double the S&P 500's 5.0% advance, and sentiment, while still bearish, has eased noticeably from the prior quarter. That is relief, not enthusiasm. At $8.49 the stock remains below its 200-day moving average near $9.32 and well short of the $11.32 peak from the prior quarter, sitting in the upper half of a post-earnings range of $7.29 to $9.23 without threatening a breakout.

The central question is whether the trimmed 2026 guidance still holds. If Oil States reaffirms the range, shows stable bookings and demonstrates working capital beginning to unwind, the narrative of a temporary delay ahead of a stronger 2027 stays intact. Another cut would suggest the backlog is converting more slowly than management believes.
