AVITA Medical's 53% Growth and Second Guidance Raise Remove Going-Concern Doubt, but a Flat Q4 Guide Tests a Stock Up 171%

AVITA Medical (RCEL) delivered the kind of quarter that changes how investors view a company. Revenue rose 53.1% year over year to $26.11 million. The net loss narrowed to $0.20 per share from $0.46, which Earnings Whispers calculates as 56.5% earnings growth. No consensus or Whisper figure was available, so this quarter is better judged on trajectory than on surprise. On that basis it was strong. Management raised full-year guidance for the second straight time, net cash use fell nearly to zero, and the going-concern qualification was removed from the 10-Q. That last change matters most for the investment case. AVITA has moved from a question of survival to a question of execution.

The operating leverage stands out. Operating expenses were $24.6 million, flat with Q2, so nearly all of the roughly $4.4 million sequential revenue gain flowed through. The operating loss shrank to $2.6 million from $9.2 million a year ago. Gross margin rose to 84.0%, up from 81.9% in Q2 and 81.7% in Q1. RECELL gross margin alone reached 88.4%. GAAP net loss of $6.2 million still lagged the operating line for two reasons:

  • $1.5 million of interest expense
  • a $2.1 million non-cash warrant revaluation charge, caused by the higher share price

In other words, the stock's rally is itself inflating reported losses. Underlying profitability is better than the EPS line suggests.

Growth also accelerated. Sequential revenue growth went from about 10% in Q1 to 13% in Q2 and 20% in Q3. RECELL drove the business: U.S. revenue reached $22.4 million, up from $18.5 million, and units rose about 21% sequentially to 3,196. Cohealyx grew to $2.1 million from $1.7 million, helped by additional hospital value analysis committee approvals. The breadth was narrower than the headline implies. PermeaDerm held at about $0.6 million and international at about $0.9 million, both flat with Q2, even though international had grown 26% the prior quarter. Margin mix is another watch item. AVITA keeps only about 50% of Cohealyx's selling price and up to 55% of PermeaDerm's, so success with these products will dilute blended margins over time. Guidance on RECELL margin differed slightly by source: the release cited 86% to 90%, while the call referenced 85% to 90%.

That is the central tension. Management attributed about $1 million of Q3 revenue to summer burn seasonality. Raised full-year guidance of $92 million to $94 million implies Q4 revenue of $24.9 million to $26.9 million, roughly flat with Q3 at the midpoint. The guidance raise is real, up from $86 million to $89 million in Q2 and $80 million to $85 million earlier. Still, the 20% sequential pace should not be extrapolated. Liquidity has improved but remains thin. The company ended the quarter with $10.5 million in cash before drawing the final $10 million Perceptive tranche, which brings total borrowings to $60 million. Stockholders' equity stands at a $31 million deficit. Management also flagged seasonally higher cash use in Q1 2027 from incentive compensation and benefit payments, so Q4 breakeven may not hold every quarter.

Longer-term catalysts are substantive:

  • CMS finalized national physician payment values and simplified billing codes for RECELL procedures, effective January 1, 2027, which could ease adoption friction.
  • PermeaDerm I met its primary endpoint, showing outcomes comparable to allograft at 70% lower product cost and 95.7% less preparation time.
  • A full six-month Cohealyx dataset is expected in November.
  • Management signaled openness to tuck-in product additions.

The market had largely anticipated the turnaround. Shares have risen 171.5% since opening at $6.01 after the August report and traded at $16.32 ahead of earnings. That is just 3.4% below the $16.90 52-week high set on October 29, and far above the inter-earnings low near $6. Investor sentiment moved from essentially neutral (0.0029) to clearly positive (0.4182), a meaningful shift in expectations. The Earnings Whispers trend signals were mostly positive, though sequential growth was neutral. With the stock entering the report near the top of its range, the bar for incremental upside is now considerably higher.

The bottom line is that AVITA answered the existential questions convincingly. Growth accelerated, margins expanded, cash burn nearly vanished, guidance rose again, and auditors agreed the going-concern doubt is gone. What it has not shown is that the Q3 pace will continue: the Q4 guide implies a sequential pause, newer products will weigh on margins, and the balance sheet still depends on borrowed capital. After a near-tripling in one quarter, investors will want evidence that the 2027 reimbursement changes and Cohealyx adoption can restart sequential growth, rather than relying on the de-risking already reflected in the stock.
