SS&C Lifts Earnings and Margin Targets Again, but a Whisper Miss and Slowing Organic Growth Test a Stock Priced Near Its Highs

SS&C Technologies reported third-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.78 per share on revenue of $1.69 billion. That edged past the $1.77 consensus but fell a penny short of the $1.79 Earnings Whisper number, a 0.6% miss against the whisper. Revenue matched consensus and grew 7.8% year over year, while Earnings Whispers calculates earnings growth at 16.3%. The company's own 14.8% adjusted EPS growth figure is measured against a prior-year number recast at a 22% tax rate. The central tension is that SS&C keeps raising profitability targets while its organic top line is visibly downshifting. The stock entered the report pricing in far more of the first story than the second.

The quality of the beat deserves scrutiny. Adjusted operating income rose 9.1% and record adjusted consolidated EBITDA of $674.8 million rose 9.0%, with margin up 40 basis points to 39.9%. That is solid operating leverage on 7.8% revenue growth. Per-share growth, however, leaned heavily on the share count. Diluted shares fell to 240.6 million from 252.6 million, so adjusted net income attributable to SS&C rose about 9.6% while adjusted EPS grew considerably faster.

On a GAAP basis, diluted EPS was flat at $0.83 and net income fell 5.3% despite a 90-basis-point improvement in GAAP operating margin to 24.2%. The drag came below the operating line. Losses from unconsolidated affiliates jumped to $47.7 million from $11.6 million, and the tax provision rose to $58.6 million from $43.5 million.

The revenue mix also shifted. Technology-enabled services grew roughly 10.6% to $1.45 billion, while license, maintenance and related revenue declined to $241.4 million from $258.6 million. That leaves the company increasingly dependent on its services franchise.

The call explained what changed beneath the headline. Organic growth slowed to 5.2% from 7.6% in the second quarter, which had been flattered by a large one-time WITS renewal. Management guided fourth-quarter organic growth to roughly 4% at the midpoint. Full-year organic growth held at 5.5%, but the trajectory within the year is clearly decelerating. Intelligent automation (Blue Prism) organic revenue fell 4.5%. Management also acknowledged that clients are using AI-driven productivity gains as leverage in pricing discussions, amid growing noise from AI-native competitors.

The revenue outlook was narrowed to $6.736 billion to $6.776 billion. The low end rose, but the top end was cut from $6.832 billion, consistent with the note that the outlook came in below estimates.

The profit outlook moved decisively the other way. Full-year adjusted EPS guidance rose to $7.11 to $7.17 from $6.93 to $7.05, the third consecutive raise, implying about 16.3% growth. Management lifted its targeted EBITDA margin expansion to 90 basis points from the 50 basis points held all year and set a 41% fourth-quarter exit margin goal, up from 40%. The EBITDA growth target rose to 10% from 9.3%.

Other positives:

  • Nine-month operating cash flow rose 10.4% to $1.22 billion.
  • Net leverage fell to 2.63x.
  • The dividend was raised 11.1%.
  • Management said it is bullish on several large mandates heading into 2027, with contracts in the $25 million to $50 million-plus range in the pipeline.
  • The company unveiled its AI Gateway and WorkHQ agentic products.

Bears still have legitimate ammunition. Management noted that large-mandate timing can swing organic growth by 100 to 200 basis points, which makes the 2027 acceleration narrative contingent on signings. The $2 billion of senior notes maturing in September 2027 is now classified as current, and SS&C expects to refinance it in the fourth quarter amid rising rates. That could pressure interest expense. Buybacks also slowed sharply to $154.8 million from a record $435.2 million in the second quarter, so the share-count tailwind behind EPS growth may moderate. Management's more open stance toward large M&A as private-equity firms exit holdings is a potential catalyst, but it also introduces execution and leverage questions.

The market setup is more complicated than the narrow miss implies. Shares have climbed 20.5% since the open following the July report, to $87.09. That leaves them 17% above the 200-day moving average and just 0.4% below the inter-earnings high of $87.42, set the day before the release. Investor sentiment improved meaningfully from -0.36 to -0.20 but remains negative, so the rally has outpaced conviction. The Earnings Whispers trend readings are mostly positive, though sequential growth is only neutral, which matches the decelerating organic picture.

The bottom line is that SS&C delivered another margin-and-cash-flow quarter and raised its earnings outlook yet again. However, it did so with organic growth stepping down for a second straight quarter, a trimmed revenue ceiling, and EPS growth that leaned on buybacks now slowing. With the stock sitting at the top of its range after a 20% run, the burden shifts to the 2027 mandate pipeline and the AI product push to show that margin expansion can be paired with re-accelerating revenue.
