TE Connectivity Misses the Whisper by a Penny as Record Orders and Above-Consensus Guidance Shift Focus to FY27

TE Connectivity's fiscal fourth quarter was a near-miss on one measure and a clear step forward on almost every other. Adjusted EPS of $3.14 beat the $3.08 consensus but fell a penny short of the $3.15 Earnings Whisper number, a 0.3% miss. Revenue of $5.312 billion topped the $5.26 billion consensus by 1.0% and grew 11.9% year over year. On Earnings Whispers' basis, earnings grew 28.7%. The company's own adjusted comparison, against $2.59 a year ago, puts growth at 21%. Either way, the miss is a rounding error. The real story is that orders, backlog, and first-quarter guidance all moved higher, while the stock entered the report sitting at the top of its range.

The quality of the quarter holds up, though a few details deserve attention. Sales were reduced by an $87 million reconciling item for IEEPA tariff refunds that TE expects to return to customers. That is why organic growth of 13.4% ran ahead of reported growth. GAAP EPS of $3.10 benefited from a $59 million tax valuation-allowance release worth $0.20 a share, which management excluded from adjusted results, so the adjusted figure is not flattered by tax. Adjusted operating margin rose 100 basis points to 22.1%. However, that is essentially flat with the 22.2% posted in the December 2025 quarter, which suggests margins have plateaued at a high level rather than continuing to expand. Free cash flow of $1.2 billion was solid despite a $227 million receivables build. The company also returned roughly $800 million to shareholders in the quarter.

The call made clear why investors care more about the forward book than the penny. Orders climbed every quarter of fiscal 2026, from $5.1 billion to $5.3 billion, then $5.7 billion, and finally $6.1 billion in Q4, up 29% year over year. Book-to-bill improved to 1.14 and backlog reached roughly $8 billion, up about 30%. Industrial orders accelerated to +47% from +36% in Q3. Digital data networks sales rose 34% organically, and that business's full-year orders were up about 70%. Management has raised its AI outlook all year. It now expects digital data networks to add more than $1 billion of revenue in fiscal 2027 and to keep adding more than $1 billion annually over an extended horizon. Transportation also improved. Auto organic growth moved from -4% in Q2 to +3% in Q3 and +6% in Q4, helped by the European EV rebound, and commercial transportation grew nearly 18%.

The guidance backs that up. Q1 sales are guided to about $5.35 billion, up roughly 15% organically, with adjusted EPS near $3.30, up 21%. Both figures sit above normal seasonality, and the guidance landed above estimates. For the full year, TE expects organic growth similar to fiscal 2026's 12%. Additional catalysts include TE's role in the NVIDIA/Cisco hybrid optical-copper transceiver specification, a humanoid-robot opportunity of up to $500 of content per unit, and the pending Astrodyne TDI acquisition.

The risks are not trivial.

  • Energy organic growth slowed sharply to 12% from 33% in Q3.
  • Transportation order growth eased to +13% from +19%.
  • Digital data networks growth is weighted to the back half of the year, with only slight sequential growth expected in Q1.
  • Inflation in resins, metals and freight shows "no relief," and the CFO framed margins as consistent rather than expanding.
  • Tariff refunds will trim another $50 million from Q1 sales.
  • FX is a modest headwind, and global vehicle production is expected to decline again.
  • The copper-versus-optical architecture debate lingers, and fiber-attach revenue is not expected until fiscal 2028 or later.

The market setup is more complicated than the tiny miss implies. Shares rose 13.1% from the open after the July report to $225.35, just 0.2% below the inter-earnings high set the day before this release. The stock is 5.7% above its 200-day moving average and 18.4% above the 52-week low it touched on the morning of the prior report. Yet investor sentiment slipped from mildly positive (0.0762) to slightly negative (-0.0416). That suggests expectations had become more guarded even as the price ran. The Earnings Whispers trend signals are mostly positive, with sequential growth neutral. In short, the stock came into the print priced for good news, and a penny shy of the whisper gives near-term bears a talking point.

The bottom line is that TE's fourth quarter changed the conversation from fiscal 2026 execution to fiscal 2027 visibility, and on that front the evidence improved. Record orders, a backlog up 30%, and above-consensus Q1 guidance outweigh a one-cent whisper miss. With margins flattening, inflation persistent, and the stock already near its range high, the bar for the next leg is execution on the back-half AI ramp, not just more beats.
