Tenable Reaccelerates and Raises Again, but a 75% Rally Collides With an Implied Q4 Slowdown

Tenable delivered the kind of quarter turnaround skeptics were not positioned for. Third-quarter non-GAAP earnings of $0.63 per share topped the $0.51 consensus by 18.9% and cleared the $0.53 Earnings Whisper number. Earnings grew 46.5% year over year. Revenue of $276.39 million beat consensus by 1.8%, and the 9.5% growth rate reaccelerated from 8.6% in the second quarter. Management also raised full-year guidance for the fourth consecutive quarter, lifting every guided metric. The central tension is not quality versus quantity. It is that the business is clearly improving while the stock has already priced in a great deal of that improvement, and the fourth-quarter outlook implies a visible top-line step down.

The quality of the beat deserves some scrutiny, though it holds up better than most. Non-GAAP operating margin expanded 380 basis points to 27.1%, up from 24.7% in Q2. That gain came from genuine operating leverage. Non-GAAP sales and marketing fell to 30.7% of revenue from 32.8%, and R&D and G&A also declined as a share of sales. On a GAAP basis, operating income more than doubled to $16.7 million and diluted EPS rose to $0.10 from $0.02. However, several non-operating factors flattered the per-share number:

  • **Share count:** Diluted shares fell about 5% to 116.0 million, after Tenable repurchased 18.2 million shares year to date for $454 million.
  • **Tax benefit:** The quarter included a one-time $0.03 discrete tax benefit.
  • **Refinancing:** Interest savings from refinancing also contributed.

Gross margin was the soft spot. Non-GAAP gross margin edged down to 81.5% from 81.6% and remains below the 82.2%–82.7% posted in Q4 2025 and Q1, as HEXA AI usage scales.

The call preserved a credible growth story built on leading indicators rather than just the reported quarter:

  • **Expansion:** Net dollar expansion improved to 107% from 106% in Q2 and 105% in Q1, its first back-to-back increase in more than four years.
  • **Platform mix:** Tenable One reached a record 59% of new business, up from 50% last quarter and 39% a year ago. The platform now has more than 5,000 customers, including a multi-million-dollar Fortune 100 conversion.
  • **Bookings indicators:** Current RPO grew 12%, total RPO rose 14.4% to $1.06 billion, new six-figure account ACV climbed 18%, and net new six-figure customers rose to 39 from 32.

Management's language shifted from "conversations turning into action" to pipeline "turning to conversion." They cited improved win rates and competitive displacements of endpoint vendors.

The forward picture is where bears have legitimate ammunition. Fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $277 million to $280 million implies just 6.9% growth at the midpoint, well below Q3's 9.5%. The guided Q4 operating margin of 24.6% also steps down from 27.1%. Management said revenue lags bookings, guided net dollar expansion flat at 107%, and declined to commit to a timeline for double-digit revenue growth in fiscal 2027. Other watch items include:

  • Net new enterprise customer adds of 413, down from more than 500 in Q4 2025.
  • A federal continuing resolution that could stretch into January.
  • Aggressive bundling by endpoint vendors.
  • Higher gross leverage from the $800 million convertible, with only $54 million left on the buyback authorization.

The buybacks have also pushed stockholders' equity into a deficit of $26.5 million. On the upside, the PHP2Shell vulnerability drove HEXA prompt volume up as much as 5x, but management said it had little Q3 impact and is too early to quantify. New AI catalysts, including the Claude Mythos-powered Adversary View and the Cyber Agents Exchange, are early-stage.

The market setup is more complicated than the surprise implies. Shares have surged 74.6% since opening at $27.86 after the July report. They entered this release at $48.65, just 1.1% below a fresh 52-week high of $49.17 and roughly 72% above the 200-day moving average. Investor sentiment improved meaningfully, from -0.40 to -0.25, but it remains negative. The crowd has not fully bought into a rally that price action has already embraced. The Earnings Whispers trend signals are uniformly positive, consistent with that momentum. Even so, a stock sitting at the top of its range after a near-vertical run gives the market little cushion if investors fixate on the 6.9% Q4 implied growth rate.

The bottom line is that Tenable's fundamentals are improving on the metrics that matter most: platform mix, net expansion, RPO and operating leverage. The full-year EPS guide now stands at $2.16 to $2.19, versus $1.81 to $1.90 at the start of the year. But some of the EPS upside came from buybacks, refinancing and a tax benefit. Q4 guidance implies deceleration, and the stock has already rerated sharply. The next test is whether bookings strength converts into double-digit revenue growth fast enough to justify where the shares now trade.
