Twilio Must Show Its Voice AI Surge Can Outrun Tougher Comps and a Higher Bar

Twilio heads into its third-quarter report carrying the kind of momentum that makes a company dangerous to bet against and difficult to impress. Last quarter brought a sweeping guidance raise, a fifth straight quarter of accelerating gross profit growth, and a clear shift in how management talks about AI. Executives no longer describe it as early experimentation. They now call it a durable multi-year tailwind. Management also warned that the outsized beats of the first half should not be treated as the new normal, while the stock has climbed well ahead of the market. The question for October 29 is whether Twilio can keep the acceleration story alive even if it delivers only a conventional beat.

Wall Street expects non-GAAP earnings of $1.46 per share on revenue of $1.51 billion, which would be growth of about 16% from the $1.30 billion reported a year ago. That is strong top-line expansion for a company of Twilio's scale. The consensus revenue figure sits at the midpoint of management's $1.505 billion to $1.515 billion range. The EPS estimate is near the top of guidance of $1.42 to $1.47. The Earnings Whisper of $1.55 is the more telling number. It sits nine cents above consensus and beyond the high end of the company's own outlook, so the informal bar is a beat of roughly the size management just said not to expect. Revenue guidance is also roughly flat with the second quarter's $1.50 billion, which suggests either deliberate conservatism or a real recognition of harder comparisons.

Those comparisons are the main test. Voice and software add-ons began accelerating in the back half of last year, so the year-over-year math gets harder from here. Voice grew faster than 20% last quarter, helped by triple-digit gains in branded calling and conversational intelligence. Self-serve revenue grew more than 30%. If voice holds near that pace against tougher comps, it would strongly support the view that AI-native customers are a structural driver rather than a temporary burst. Management pointed to AI cohort customers already at $6 million and $9 million in annual run rate. Fresh examples of that kind would help. Dollar-based net expansion is the cleanest scorecard. It climbed from 109% to 116% over three quarters, and holding at or above that level would show existing customers are still deepening usage.

Margins need careful reading. Carrier pass-through fees, now assumed at about $250 million for the year after repeated upward revisions, inflate revenue while optically compressing gross margin by around 210 basis points. They do not affect gross profit or operating income dollars, so gross profit growth is the better signal. Another step up from last quarter's 18% would extend the acceleration streak. A dip would not be alarming given the comps, but it would mark the first crack in the narrative. Progress toward the raised full-year targets of $1.135 billion to $1.155 billion for both operating income and free cash flow would confirm that growth is turning into leverage. The newly launched console, which management said lifted conversion by more than 90%, is mostly a 2027 revenue story. Here the useful evidence is funnel health and early traction from the Atlassian voice AI partnership.

The stock has risen about 13% since the last report while the S&P 500 barely moved. At roughly $267, it trades far above its 200-day average near $185, but it is also well off its post-earnings peak of about $308. Sentiment is still positive, though cooler than it was ahead of last quarter. That points to optimism with some caution rather than euphoria.

The central issue is durability. If Twilio clears the Whisper, holds net expansion and voice growth despite harder comps, and tightens or raises its full-year outlook again, the acceleration thesis stays intact. A results-in-line quarter with flat guidance would not break the story. It would, however, suggest the steepest part of the climb may already be priced in.
