West Pharmaceutical Beats and Raises Again as HVP Mix Drives a Margin Step-Up, but Q4 Implies Slower Growth

West Pharmaceutical Services delivered its third consecutive beat-and-raise. Adjusted EPS of $2.66 topped the $2.18 consensus by 22.0% and grew 35.7% year over year. Revenue of $874.5 million beat the $825.93 million estimate by 5.9% and rose 8.7%. Management lifted full-year adjusted EPS guidance to $9.38-$9.48 from $8.85-$9.05. That is roughly 19% above the $7.85-$8.20 range West started the year with. The central development is that the growth story has become a margin story. A richer mix of high-value components is converting revenue growth into disproportionate earnings growth. The open question is how much of that conversion survives once pricing normalizes and the comparisons get harder.

The quality of the beat holds up, with one caveat about the GAAP line. GAAP diluted EPS of $3.02 was inflated by a $55.7 million pre-tax gain on the sale of SmartDose 3.5mL to AbbVie. That gain was worth $0.45 per share net of related items, so the adjusted figure is the cleaner read. Reported revenue growth of 8.7% understates underlying demand. Organic growth was 11.9% once the shrinking SmartDose contribution ($11.8 million versus $29.8 million a year ago) and currency are removed. The margin expansion is real and accelerating:

  • Gross margin reached 39.7%, up from 37.7% in Q2 and 35.1% in Q1.
  • Adjusted operating margin climbed to 25.3%, up 420 basis points year over year and well above Q2's 22.6%.
  • Management now expects about 300 basis points of full-year operating margin expansion, versus more than 100 initially.

Beneath the surface, HVP Components did the heavy lifting. The category grew 20.3% organically and reached 53% of sales, up from 49% in Q2 and 48% in Q1. GLP-1-related HVP growth accelerated to well into the 30s, from the high teens in Q2, and now represents about 12% of revenue. Non-GLP-1 HVP held in the high teens, so this is not purely an obesity-drug story. HVP Delivery Devices excluding SmartDose rose 26.4%. Asia Pacific surged 42%, up from 27% in Q2, led by GLP-1 generics activity in India and China. Biologics grew 23.2% organically and Pharma 21.4%. The soft spots were Generics, down 4.5% organically, and West Vantage, which fell 6.6% organically as the CGM program rolled off. Management expects Vantage growth to stay muted into 2027.

The forward catalysts look credible:

  • Management added more than 200 upgrade projects this year.
  • It cited draft HHS guidance resembling Europe's Annex 1 as a potential U.S. upgrade tailwind.
  • West is launching a new wave of HVP finishing capacity in Europe and the U.S., due online in 18-24 months.
  • The dividend rose 18%, marking the 34th consecutive annual increase.

Bears still have legitimate ammunition. Implied fourth-quarter organic growth slows to 6%-7%, against a tough HVP devices comparison and a stronger dollar. Pricing contributed about four points, above West's 2%-3% long-term assumption, and management expects it to normalize. The SmartDose exit will cut roughly 290 basis points from reported growth in 2027. Year-to-date free cash flow of $278 million is down about 5%, as receivables rose to $748 million from $574 million at year-end. Capex guidance was cut to $215-$220 million from $250-$275 million, which management framed as efficiency rather than weaker demand. Repurchases of $685 million year to date helped shrink cash to $464 million from $791 million. The CEO transition adds some strategic uncertainty, although Michel Lagarde's early tone was confident.

The market setup is more complicated than the surprise implies. Shares closed at $403.64 the day before the report. That was within 0.3% of a 52-week high set during the quarter and 29.5% above the 200-day moving average. The stock had rallied 24% off its late-July low, so it entered earnings priced for strength. Investor sentiment remained positive but weakened noticeably, falling from 0.31 to 0.15. That suggests enthusiasm cooled even as the price climbed. The Earnings Whispers trend signals are broadly positive across price, sequential growth, and momentum, which fits a stock that has been rewarded for repeated upward revisions.

The bottom line is that West produced a high-quality quarter. Its mix-driven margin gains, accelerating GLP-1 and APAC demand, and a fourth guidance raise make the earnings trajectory clearly better than it looked at the start of the year. The tension is timing. Fourth-quarter organic growth is set to roughly halve, pricing is expected to fade, and 2027 carries a SmartDose headwind and a soft Vantage segment. All of this arrives with the stock at its highs and sentiment already cooling. The fundamentals have improved; the bar for the next leg has risen with them.
