The current quarter interest income of $380 million increased $14.8 million, or 4 percent, over the prior quarter and increased $55.0 million, or 17 percent, over the prior year third quarter and was primarily driven by both increased loans and increased interest rates on the loan portfolio. The current quarter interest expense of $90.1 million increased $1.3 million, or 1 percent, from the prior quarter. Interest expense decreased $9.5 million, or 10 percent, from the prior year third quarter primarily due to a decrease in interest rates on deposits and a decrease in high cost borrowings.
