BWXT Beats on Margins and Sets a Firmer 2027 Outlook, but Slowing Revenue and a Delayed New-Build Order Keep the Stock Near Its Lows

BWX Technologies delivered a margin-driven earnings beat that exposed a widening gap between profitability and top-line momentum. Non-GAAP EPS of $1.26 topped the $1.19 consensus and the $1.24 Earnings Whisper number, a 1.6% surprise, and grew 26.0% year over year, a sharp acceleration from the 5% growth posted in the second quarter. Revenue told a different story. Sales of $952.97 million rose 10.0% but missed consensus by 4.0%, and growth has now slowed for two straight quarters, from 26% in the first quarter to 18% in the second and 10% in the third. Organic growth was just 7%. That is the central tension. BWXT is converting each revenue dollar into profit far more efficiently, but it is generating those dollars more slowly than investors expected.

The quality of the beat holds up better than the revenue miss might suggest, although part of it came from below the operating line. Government Operations carried the quarter. Segment operating income jumped 26% on only 4% revenue growth, and adjusted EBITDA margin reached 22.6%, extending a clean sequential climb from 18.8% in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 20.4%, then 20.9%. Commercial Operations went the other way. Revenue grew 25%, but operating income rose only 10% as product and service mix and SG&A investment absorbed the gains. GAAP unallocated corporate expense also more than doubled to $16.8 million. Below the operating line, interest expense fell to $5.1 million from $14.0 million and interest income rose, which helped EPS grow faster than the 19% increase in adjusted EBITDA. Free cash flow was a clear strength at $150.5 million, up 59%, supported by advance billings and tighter working capital.

The call reinforced the divergence. Commercial organic growth decelerated to 15% from 33% in the second quarter and 39% in the first. Naval propulsion revenue declined on lower materials procurement. Management held 2026 adjusted EBITDA at roughly $667 million and narrowed non-GAAP EPS guidance to $4.72-$4.77 around the prior midpoint rather than raising it again, while lifting the low end of free cash flow guidance to $350-$360 million. More consequential was a timing slip. The first U.S. new-build equipment order, which management had described as expected this year, is now only "possible" by year-end, with the first half of 2027 as the backstop. Management tied the delay to risk allocation among utilities, government and vendors. Investors also have to weigh competition from Doosan and IHI for AP1000 content, where Westinghouse controls supplier allocation.

The forward-looking catalysts were nonetheless substantive. BWXT's BANR microreactor was selected for the Army's Janus program at Fort Campbell and for Prodigy Clean Energy's transportable plant in Canada, its first international microreactor win. The company signed a supply deal for an initial metric ton of TRISO fuel with Antares and completed a Cambridge expansion that adds roughly 50% more heavy-component capacity. It also plans a final investment decision on a U.S. large-component facility by year-end that does not depend on firm orders. The preliminary 2027 outlook calls for high-single-digit revenue growth and high-single to low-double-digit adjusted EBITDA and EPS growth, with EBITDA growth slightly ahead of the Investor Day framework. The caveats are real. The microreactor contracts are early-stage with undefined economics, the pending medical divestiture holds 2027 commercial revenue growth to low single digits, and 2027 free cash flow is guided only flat to slightly up. Third-quarter bookings of $538 million also compared with $2.25 billion a year earlier. Lumpy naval awards largely explain that gap, and backlog still grew to $8.56 billion from $7.39 billion.

The market had already turned skeptical before the report. Shares fell 24.7% from the $173.50 opening after the August report to $130.70. They trade 29.3% below the 200-day moving average and sit only 6.2% above a 52-week low of $123.05 set on October 23. Investor sentiment slipped from modestly positive (0.07) to modestly negative (-0.05), a meaningful but not dramatic shift. The Earnings Whispers trend readings are split along the same line as the fundamentals. Sequential growth and momentum are positive, while price and AVWAP trends remain negative.

The bottom line is that BWXT delivered a high-quality profit quarter, stronger cash generation and an encouraging 2027 framework, but it did not deliver the revenue acceleration or the firm new-build order that would ease concerns about commercial timing. With the stock near its lows, the setup now rests less on margins, which are clearly improving, and more on whether management converts its bid pipeline into the large commercial awards it keeps promising. A further slip past the first half of 2027 would give bears legitimate ammunition.
