NBT Bancorp Posts a Record Quarter and Wider Margin, but Flat Guidance, Rising Costs and Credit Creep Leave Investors Cooler

NBT Bancorp delivered a record third quarter, earning $1.11 per share against a $1.09 consensus, a 1.8% beat, while earnings grew 5.7% year over year. GAAP and operating EPS were both $1.11. Earnings Whispers puts revenue at $245.34 million, 27.0% above the $193.13 million consensus and up 1.4% from a year ago. That revenue surprise needs context. The $245.34 million figure appears to combine gross interest income with fee income. The consensus looks closer to a net-revenue basis of $142.1 million in net interest income plus $52.9 million in noninterest income, and on that basis the release says revenue grew 4.5% sequentially. The more meaningful story is the earnings trajectory: EPS climbed from $0.98 in the first quarter to $1.02 in the second and $1.11 in the third. The central tension is that this acceleration came with guidance that was reaffirmed rather than raised, cost expectations that moved higher, and investor sentiment that soured sharply.

The quality of the beat is good but not pristine. Net interest income rose 3.7% sequentially to $142.1 million, and the FTE net interest margin widened 5 basis points to 3.78%. The margin was 3.66% a year ago, and it has now improved for four straight quarters. Loan yields rose to 5.69% as cash flows repriced higher. Sequential operating ROA improved to 1.41% and ROTCE to 16.53%. Three tailwinds flattered the quarter, however:

  • Purchase accounting accretion rose $1.5 million and contributed roughly 3 basis points of margin. Management expects it to normalize to $6 million to $6.5 million.
  • The quarter had one extra day.
  • The loan loss provision fell to $3.8 million from $6.1 million, helped by a modest allowance release tied to better economic forecasts.

Fee income was cleaner. Service charges jumped 13.4% after deposit repricing that management expects to persist, and retirement plan fees grew 8.7% year over year.

Balance-sheet growth has recovered. Loans outside the run-off portfolios are up $427 million, or 3.9%, year to date, compared with 2.4% growth at midyear. Deposit mix improved as time deposits shrank. Still, the call left management sounding more steady than accelerating. Fourth-quarter loan growth was guided as consistent, and 2027 starts from a 3% to 5% baseline. Rising rates, with mortgages near 7%, are causing some projects not to pencil and tightening spreads. Commercial payoffs remain elevated, including losses to Farm Credit and agency lenders. Total cost of funds ticked up a basis point to 1.42%, and management signaled it may tolerate a higher deposit beta this cycle. That puts the margin story at risk of plateauing, even though about $3 billion of variable-rate assets benefit from higher rates.

Costs and credit give bears legitimate ammunition. Noninterest expense rose to $115.2 million from $111.4 million in the second quarter. Full-year expense growth is now framed at roughly 3% to 3.5%, above the 2.5% to 3% target given last quarter. Double-digit medical inflation and branch expansion point to higher 2027 costs, and retirement plan growth is expected to slow to 5% to 7%. On credit, net charge-offs held at a benign 0.14%, past-due loans fell to 0.35% from 0.63%, and criticized and classified loans declined. Even so, nonaccrual loans have risen to $65.5 million from $46.5 million a year ago, nonperforming assets reached 0.43% of assets, and reserve coverage of nonperforming loans has slipped to about 200% from 260%. Tangible book value growth also slowed to 8.8% year over year from 12.8% at midyear.

The upstate New York semiconductor buildout is the most interesting longer-term catalyst. Micron has driven pilings for its first fab, and NBT plans a branch about a mile from the campus in the first half of 2027. GlobalFoundries has also announced two new fabs in Saratoga County. Management floated 5% to 7% loan growth if that activity accelerates, but it framed this as a possibility rather than guidance.

The market had largely priced in a solid quarter. Shares are up just 1.3% since the open after the July report, at $52.89, but they sit 11.3% above their 200-day moving average of $47.53. The stock has held a substantial premium to its longer-term trend even as near-term price action stalled. Investor sentiment moved from roughly neutral (-0.05) to clearly negative (-0.44), a meaningful deterioration that suggests expectations had shifted toward the cost, credit and funding concerns rather than the record print. The AVWAP trend remains positive while the price trend is neutral, consistent with a stock that is holding gains rather than extending them.

The bottom line is that NBT produced a high-quality, margin-driven beat with accelerating sequential earnings, but part of it rested on accretion, an extra day and a lighter provision. The forward picture is steady rather than improving: guidance was reaffirmed, expense expectations rose, funding costs are turning, and problem loans are creeping higher. The semiconductor corridor offers real upside optionality. With shares already well above their 200-day average and sentiment turning negative, the burden is on NBT to show that margin gains and loan growth can outrun rising costs into 2027.
